## Prohibited signs in Springfield

- Any sign that is structurally unsound, or is a hazard to traffic or pedestrians.
- Illegal signs.
- Signs consisting in whole or in part of a series, line, or row of lights, whether supported by cables or other physical means, within 150 feet of a street and visible therefrom. Notwithstanding the foregoing, holiday lights and decorations displayed not more than 30 days before a holiday shall be exempted from this section.
- Roof signs.
- Any sign not specifically authorized by this ordinance.

## Sign plan & submission notes

- Except as specifically excluded from the requirements for obtaining approval, it is unlawful for any person to post, display, substantially change, or erect a sign in the city without first having obtained a sign approval or any other permit required by this chapter.
- Signs which are not visible from a public right-of-way or from neighboring properties are not subject to the standards of this chapter.
- Signs over six feet in height or overhanging public right-of-way, or requiring the use of electricity, require a building permit and inspection during and after installation.
- Applications for sign approvals are submitted to the director and processed within 15 business days.
- Sign locations must be shown as part of site plan approval for developments requiring a site plan (see Section 4.46.2: Site Plan Requirements, item 27).
- Variances from sign standards may be granted by City Council under specified hardship criteria (see Section 4.45.5.11).
- Appeals of sign permit denials or revocations may be heard by the City Council.
