## Prohibited signs in Frederick

- Any sign casting illumination, directly or indirectly, on any street, or on any adjacent property within a residential district.

## Signs exempt from permit in Frederick

- Government signs which form the expression of that government, including official notices or advertisements, are authorized in every district without a permit when erected and maintained pursuant to law.
- Traffic control devices on private or public property erected and maintained to comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices adopted by the Federal Highway Administration are authorized without a permit.
- Inward-facing signs within a stadium, park, or similar facility, intended to be viewed only by persons within such facility, are authorized without a permit.

- Signs used to identify the address of a property in accordance with the City Fire Prevention Code are authorized without a permit.
- Official notices or advertisements posted or displayed by or under the direction of any public or court officer in the performance of official or directed duties, provided they are removed by the property owner within ten days after their purpose has been accomplished or as otherwise required by law, are exempt.
- Letters or numbers that are carved into stone, concrete or similar material or made of bronze, aluminum or other permanent type construction and made an integral part of the structure shall not be computed for purposes of sign area allotment.

## Sign plan & submission notes

- For shopping centers in the GC, MU-1 and MU-2 Districts, at the site plan review stage, the Planning Commission may modify the requirements for sign area and building frontage allocation, provided that a complete signage package is submitted with the formal application, setting forth the proposed areas, dimensions, types, elevations and locations of all signage to be erected at the shopping center.
- A site plan approved by the Planning Department or Planning Commission must accompany each application for a Zoning Permit for residential entry signs and clearly identify the neighborhood number of units, and locations and size of all proposed community identification signs.
- For Harry Grove Stadium signs, prior to issuance of a building permit for any sign, the location, size and design of the sign must be approved by the Board of Aldermen, after receiving recommendations from the Planning Commission and the Parks and Recreation Commission.
