## Prohibited signs in Independence

- It is unlawful for any sign to be erected, altered, repaired, removed, equipped or maintained in the city that does not conform to this section.
- No sign may contain any indecent, obscene or offensive pictures, symbols or written matter.
- No sign other than a governmental sign, warning sign, or a sign advertising an occasional sale may be erected or temporarily placed within any street right-of-way or upon any public easement.
- A permit for any sign within 50 feet of any street, official traffic sign, signal, intersection, driveway, or crosswalk will be issued only if it does not interfere with visibility or distract drivers or interfere with traffic signs or signals.
- Illuminated signs must comply with the state electrical code requirements, be shielded to prevent light from being directed at oncoming traffic and residences or residential areas, and illumination must be indirect or diffused.
- Flashing signs and motion signs are prohibited in all districts, except for informational signs giving time, date, and temperature in commercial/light industrial districts.
- Billboards (off-premises signs) are prohibited in all districts except as provided for in subsection 550.11, subdivision 8.
- Roof signs erected on the roof, or in the air space over the roof of any structure, are prohibited in all districts.
- Wall signs painted directly on the walls of buildings are prohibited in all residential districts.

## Signs exempt from permit in Independence

- No permit is required for signs having an area of four square feet or less.
- No permit is required for signs erected by a governmental unit, public school or church.
- No permit is required for campaign signs listed in subsection 550.11, subdivision 5.
- No permit is required for memorial signs or tablets containing the name of the building, its use, and date of erection when cut or built into the walls of the building and constructed of bronze, brass, stone, marble or similar material.
- Warning signs are permitted in all districts without a permit, provided that the sign does not exceed two square feet in area.
