## Prohibited signs in Norman

- Any sign which is installed or erected in or projects into or over any public right-of-way, except in the case of a sign for which a permit has been issued in conformance with the requirements of this chapter.
- Signs attached or otherwise applied to trees or utility poles.
- Signs not permanently affixed or attached to the ground or to any structure, including A-frame type signs, except for real estate signs attached to posts driven into the ground, window signs and temporary barriers.

## Signs exempt from permit in Norman

- Signs which are not visible beyond the boundaries of the lot or parcel upon which they are located or from any public right-of-way, except that such signs shall be subject to the safety regulations of the building code and the electric code of the City.

- The flag, pennant or insignia of any nation, organization of nations, State, County or City, any religious, civic, fraternal organization, or any educational institution. Additionally, one corporate name or logo-bearing flag not exceeding 24 square feet in size will be permitted.
- Temporary decorations or displays, when such are clearly incidental to and are customarily and commonly associated with any national, local or religious holiday or celebration.
- Temporary or permanent signs erected by public utility companies or construction companies to warn of danger or hazardous conditions, including signs indicating the presence of underground cables, gas lines and similar devices.
- Merchandise, pictures or models of products or services which are incorporated as an integral part of a window display.
- Signs displayed on trucks, buses, trailers or other vehicles which are being operated or stored in the normal course of a business, such as signs indicating the name of the owner or business which are located on moving vans, delivery trucks, rental trucks and trailers and the like, provided that the primary purpose of such vehicles is not for the display of signs, and, provided that they are parked or stored in areas appropriate to their use as vehicles.
- Directional signs located in the street right-of-way; provided such signs are approved by the Director of Public Works or his designee.
- Political signs may be placed within the right-of-way (the area between the property line and the curb or edge of the public street) in front of or along the side of any single-family dwelling, provided that the permission of the property owner has been obtained and such signs are no wider than 30 inches or taller than 20 inches in height. Political signs may not be placed in the right-of-way abutting the rear or side yard of the dwelling when that portion of the lot abuts a section line road or an arterial roadway. If the dwelling has a fence or wall along the rear or side of the lot which separates the dwelling from the arterial or section line road, no sign may be placed either on or outside of that fence adjacent to the roadway.
