What is PermitPal?
PermitPal is code check software for sign companies. Type in an address and it finds the jurisdiction and zoning district, then pulls the sign rules for that spot: wall, monument, pylon, window, EMC and temporary signs. Every answer cites the section of the ordinance it came from.
Is it free to try?
Yes. A free account gets 5 address searches, no credit card needed. After that you can buy credits as you go or pick a monthly plan.
How does credit-based pricing work?
One credit covers one address. On-Demand is $20 per credit. Flex is $99 a month with 10 credits and Pro is $349 a month with 40 credits. Credits are shared across your team, and every plan covers all 7,000+ jurisdictions.
Do seats cost extra?
No. Flex and Pro have no seat limits, so you can invite your whole team. Custom plans add team structure options for larger companies.
How accurate is it?
Every rule comes from the adopted municipal code or zoning ordinance, and every answer cites the section so you can verify it in one click. Some things cities don't publish online, like master sign plans, planned developments (PUDs) and some overlay rules, so check those with the city. If you use an Excel template, you can add human verification for $35: our team calls the city to fill in the fields the software couldn't, usually in 2 to 3 business days.
Can I search a list of addresses at once?
Yes. Bulk search runs up to 50 addresses at a time and returns the results as PDF reports or Excel files.
Can my team share an account?
Yes. Everyone on the team shares one credit pool. Team owners manage members and see usage.
How does it work?
1. Type an address or GPS coordinates. 2. PermitPal finds the city or county that has authority, the zoning district, and any overlay or historic district we have mapped. 3. You get the sign rules by sign type, with a citation to the ordinance on each rule. From there you can ask follow-up questions in the chat, pull a site plan from county GIS, see permit history, and export a PDF report or Excel file.
Why not just ask ChatGPT or another AI chatbot?
General chatbots answer from whatever they find on the web, and they often can't tell you which version of the code they read or whether your parcel is even in that city. PermitPal starts from the address, matches the actual zoning district, and answers from the adopted ordinance for that jurisdiction. Every rule links to its source section so you can check it yourself.
What counts as a search?
A search of one new address. Running the same address again doesn't cost another credit, and neither does a search that fails.
Can I upgrade, downgrade, or cancel?
Yes. Upgrades take effect right away. If you cancel, your plan stays active through the end of the period you've paid for and doesn't renew. Payments aren't refunded.
How current is the data?
We track ordinance updates and refresh cities as codes change. If something looks out of date, tell us and we'll check it against the city's current code.
What are Excel templates and how do they work?
Send us the Excel form your team already uses for code checks and we build it into PermitPal for you. After a search, you download it filled in with that address's data. No retyping.
Who is PermitPal for?
Mostly estimators, project managers, permit coordinators and owners at sign companies, from small local shops to national sign program firms. Permit expeditors use it too. We also work with cities and counties on a preliminary submittal check, which is covered on our For Municipalities page.
Does PermitPal file permits for me?
No. PermitPal tells you what's allowed and where the rule comes from, so you can quote and prepare the application. If you want someone to handle the filing, we can refer you to a permit filing partner.
What happens if I run out of credits?
Searches pause until you add credits. You can buy an add-on pack any time: $15 per credit on Flex and $10 per credit on Pro. Credits you buy don't expire.
What if my city isn't covered yet?
Click "Request City" after a search. Our team adds most new jurisdictions within 1 to 2 business days, often the same day.
Do you support GPS coordinate searches?
Yes. Enter latitude and longitude for undeveloped sites or when you only have GPS data. PermitPal finds the jurisdiction and zoning the same way it does for an address.
Is there an API?
Yes. The REST API returns the same data as the app, one address per call, so you can pull it into your own systems. API access is available on Custom plans.
