Prohibited Signs in Huntsville

  • It is unlawful to construct, erect, or maintain any sign not in conformity with this article (citywide).
  • Commercial use signs are prohibited in residential districts (unless part of an allowed mixed-use building), on any attached sign, and on any permanent sign located at major entrances.
  • Signs painted or pasted directly on structures are prohibited.
  • Feather signs are prohibited.
  • Signs incorporating any noisy mechanical device are prohibited.
  • No sign may be projected onto the side of a building, wall, or ground.
  • Illuminated signs and outside lighting may only emit constant intensity; flashing, blinking, intermittent, rotating, pulsating, moving or animated illumination is prohibited (except compliant electronic display signs). Focused light may not be directed onto streets/sidewalks or adjacent premises so as to cause glare or a traffic hazard.
  • Projecting signs may not extend more than four feet from the building face, must maintain at least 12 feet of overhead clearance, and must be at least two feet horizontally from the curb.
  • Roof signs may not extend more than 12 feet above the roof (and are entirely prohibited in certain districts such as Research Park West for attached signs).
  • No sign or portion thereof may be placed in any street or highway right-of-way or in any utility/drainage easement, and no projecting/awning sign may be over the right-of-way unless attached to a structural building element and meeting projection/clearance requirements.
  • Awnings may project no further than eight feet from the building face and must maintain a six-foot clear area behind the curb; minimum awning height is eight feet above sidewalk.
