- It is unlawful for any person to place, maintain, or display upon or in view of any street any unofficial sign, signal, marking, or device which resembles or imitates an official traffic sign, signal, or device or directs movement of traffic or hides any official sign or signal from view.
- Willfully defacing, injuring, moving, obstructing or interfering with any official traffic sign, signal or marking is prohibited.
- No sign shall be erected on the exterior of any building or on any land unless and until the Building Commissioner has issued a sign permit, unless specifically exempted.
- No freestanding signs shall be erected if they create a safety hazard to vehicular or pedestrian traffic, in the opinion of the Building Commissioner.

- Any sign with any of the following characteristics is prohibited: having flashing lights visible from outside; flashing, rotating, or having motorized moving parts visible from a public way; constituting a traffic hazard or being detrimental to traffic safety; obstructing ingress or egress from required exits or windows, or being installed at a height under six feet six inches; being structurally unsafe; constituting a hazard to safety or health due to inadequate maintenance, dilapidation, or abandonment; not kept in good repair or capable of causing electrical shocks; making use of words or symbols such as STOP, LOOK, or DANGER to mislead or confuse traffic; using spinners and streamers (except for specified temporary signs); being affixed to a fence, utility pole or structure, or tree, shrub, rock, or other natural object.
- Any sign that no longer advertises a bona fide business conducted or product sold on the premises is prohibited.
- No sign shall be painted or posted directly on the exterior surface of any wall, including windows and doors (exceptions apply for letters or devices securely affixed with a minimum projection).
