Prohibited Signs in Sudbury Town

  • No exterior sign or advertising device shall be erected except as provided by this bylaw.
  • No sign which requires a sign permit under this bylaw shall be erected except in the exact location and manner described in the permit.
  • No sign shall be erected that in any way creates a traffic hazard or obstructs traffic.
  • No sign shall be painted or posted directly on the exterior surface of any wall. All exterior attached signs must be affixed to a removable intermediary surface securely attached to the wall, except for individual letters or devices cut into or securely affixed to the exterior with at least 1/4 inch projection.
  • No sign shall be illuminated between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., except for signs on premises open for business.
  • Only white lights shall be used for direct illumination of a sign.
  • Illumination must be shaded, shielded, directed and maintained at a sufficiently low intensity and brightness to not affect the safe vision of vehicle operators on the premises or adjacent ways.
  • All illumination of signage must be dark-sky compliant per the International Dark Sky Association.
  • Any sign identifying products, businesses, services or activities no longer on the premises must be removed within 60 days.

  • Portable signs and changeable copy signs are prohibited, except as permitted in 3259A.
  • Signs having the shape and color of a traffic control device, or that may be confused with/imitate official traffic or street signs or signals, or use words such as 'stop', 'slow', 'caution', 'danger', 'warning' or similar, are prohibited.
  • Signs creating a potential hazard to safe, efficient movement of vehicular or pedestrian traffic, or which are obscene, indecent, or immoral are prohibited.
  • Integral roof signs are prohibited.
