Prohibited Signs in Las Vegas

  • No sign shall be erected, placed, established, relocated, painted, created, or maintained except in conformance with the standards, procedures, exemptions, and other requirements of the applicable sign ordinance section (residential, commercial, or industrial district).
  • All signs must comply with applicable provisions of the technical codes of the City of Las Vegas, including the City Building Code.
  • No sign shall be allowed unless its size, characteristics, and location conform to ordinance requirements and the number of signs does not exceed allowed limits.
  • No sign shall be erected in the public right-of-way except as otherwise provided.
  • Except as otherwise provided, all on-premise signs must be permanently mounted to a building or support structure; portable signs are only allowed as expressly permitted.
  • No sign shall be painted onto a wood or masonry perimeter fence.
  • No sign shall emit any sound as part of the advertising message.
  • No sign shall emit any odor as part of the advertising message.
  • Signs not expressly permitted or exempted under the applicable ordinance section are prohibited.

  • Permanent balloon signs are prohibited.
  • Outdoor, portable electric signs are prohibited except as permitted in temporary sign provisions.
  • Electronic message units, animated signs, and flashing signs are prohibited within 200 feet of property planned or zoned for residential use unless not visible from the residential property.
  • All signs must be constructed of durable materials and attached by direct attachment to a rigid wall, frame, or structure (except allowable temporary signs).
  • Signs must be installed by a licensed contractor when a construction permit is required.
  • Signs not maintained in good structural condition, or allowed to become unsafe or dangerous, may have their sign certificate revoked.

Exempt Signs in Las Vegas

  • Any public safety sign, notice, or warning required by applicable federal, state, or local law, regulation, or ordinance.
  • Non-commercial messages (unless otherwise regulated by section).
  • Any sign inside a building not legible from more than three feet beyond the premises' nearest boundary line.
  • Works of art or decorative architectural graphics that do not include a commercial message and are not symbolic of any commercial business or activity on the premises.

Sign Plan & Submission Notes for Las Vegas

  • No sign certificate shall be issued for an existing or proposed sign in a commercial or industrial district unless the sign is consistent with any Master Sign Plan in effect for the property.
  • Parcels covered by a Master Sign Plan in certain commercial/industrial districts may consolidate permitted sign area for all freestanding signs into a consolidated sign, or as approved through a Master Sign Plan.
  • For awning and wall signs in multi-tenant commercial/industrial buildings, the area limits for each tenant may be based on the portion of the building elevation of the leased/occupied area only, except as may be approved through a Master Sign Plan.
  • For consolidated signs, parcels may be covered by an approved Master Sign Plan, allowing for additional area or height in certain cases.
  • Supergraphic signage (in applicable downtown overlay districts) requires approval of a Master Sign Plan that illustrates how the supergraphic signage will be integrated with architectural features and other signage on site.
  • Approval of a Master Sign Plan application, in accordance with LVMC 19.16.270, is required for all supergraphic signage.
  • Weekend directional signs for subdivision development in residential districts shall not be installed unless they are approved as part of a master weekend directional sign plan. A certificate application and sign map is required for each development employing weekend directional signs.
  • In cases where signs are to be located on public right-of-way in Transect Zones T4, T5, and T6, the sign location must be approved by a license agreement.
  • Sign certificate applications (where required) must be submitted in accordance with LVMC 19.16.200, and in some cases (e.g., subdivision development sale signs, construction signs), must include a site plan, description, and written authorization from the property owner.
