  • No sign shall be placed on or attached to any tree, utility pole, or pedestal (except by the utility company), or above any public land including rights-of-way, except as regulated by this Chapter (Sec. 155.31(A)(1) and (3)).
  • No sign shall be placed or kept in use to advertise an activity, business, or service no longer conducted on the premises (Sec. 155.31(A)(2)).
  • No sign or supporting structure (including fixtures) may be located above or project over any private sidewalk, street, drive, or parking area at less than nine ft. above sidewalk or less than 15 ft. above street/drive/parking area (Sec. 155.31(A)(4)).
  • No sign may be located on any sidewalk or unpaved walkway intended for public use unless it allows at least three ft. in radius of horizontal clearance on at least one side (Sec. 155.31(A)(5)).
  • No signs (or parts between two ft. and eight ft. above ground) may be placed within a visibility triangle for traffic extending 20 ft. in each direction from the street corner intersection (Sec. 155.31(A)(6)).
  • No sign shall be located closer than six ft. to a secondary power line or closer than 15 ft. to a primary power line (Sec. 155.31(A)(7)).
  • No lighted or permanent sign may be mounted or placed on or extended above the side or rear wall of any building or be located in the side or rear yard when it faces and is visible from a contiguous residential area not separated by a public street or alley (Sec. 155.31(A)(8)).
  • After closing hours, businesses must reduce outdoor illumination (including illuminated signs) between 11:00 p.m. and sunrise by turning off unnecessary lighting, except for lighting associated with flag display, safety, or security (Sec. 155.32).

  • No sign shall be illuminated in a way that causes glare or brightness that constitutes a hazard or nuisance to traffic (Sec. 155.50(D)).
  • No sign may prevent free access or egress from any door, window, or fire escape, or block access to a fire hydrant or be attached to a standpipe/fire escape (Sec. 155.50(E)).
  • No sign or support structure shall constitute a hazard to safety or health by reason of inadequate design, construction, repair, or maintenance (Sec. 155.50(F)).
  • It is unlawful to change, modify, alter, or otherwise deviate from the terms and conditions of an issued sign permit without prior City approval (Sec. 155.61(A)(1)).
  • Permanent or specially permitted signs erected without a sign permit are unlawful (Sec. 155.100).

  • The following signs are exempt from regulation under the Chapter: any sign inside a building; commemorative plaques and historical markers; any signs belonging to governmental or public utilities; holiday signage and decorations; handheld signs (Sec. 155.21).
