Prohibited Signs in Destin

  • No operation or activity producing glare shall be conducted so that direct or indirect light from the source shall cause illumination in excess of zero foot candles when measured at grade at the property line with an adjacent residential use area.
  • Laser source lights or any similar high intensity light for outdoor advertising are prohibited unless approved by temporary lighting permit.
  • Operation of searchlights or beacons is prohibited unless approved by temporary lighting permit.
  • All outside light sources must be installed so the illumination is controlled and not directed across any bounding property line of less than 200 linear feet.
  • It is unlawful to place or maintain on private property any light source of such intensity or brilliance within the field of view of a driver so as to impair vision upon the public roadway, or to interfere with the operation of a motor vehicle.
  • No outdoor lighting that fails to conform to the ordinance that is damaged in excess of 50 percent of its market value shall be used; it must be discontinued, removed, made to conform to the ordinance, or replaced with compliant lighting.
  • Any fixture that produces nuisance glare or produces glare on roadways shall be required to either discontinue use or be replaced with one that conforms to the requirements.
  • All lighting for new development and redevelopment must be cutoff fixtures (or meet certain exceptions) and comply with mounting height restrictions (max. 16 feet in residential/pedestrian areas, max. 30 feet in nonresidential areas).
  • No lighting other than approved turtle friendly lights is allowed on dune walkovers.
  • Floodlights, up lights or spotlights that are directly visible from the beach, or which indirectly or cumulatively illuminate the beach, are prohibited.
  • No display of merchandise or signage of any sort may be placed upon the Harbor Boardwalk.
