Prohibited Signs in Detroit

  • It shall be unlawful for any person to violate any provision of this article or to aid and abet another to violate such provision. (Sec. 4-1-2, Sec. 4-2-1, Sec. 4-3-2, Sec. 4-5-1, etc.)
  • It shall be unlawful for any person to affix, fasten, post, paint, or otherwise place any advertising sign, advertising material, or other commercial message of any kind upon any public or private property, or cause or authorize the same to be done, without the authorization of the owner thereof or its agent. (Sec. 4-1-4)
  • It shall be unlawful to carry or place on any freeway overpass any advertising sign, advertising material, or other commercial message that would be oriented toward and visible to the occupants of vehicles on such freeway. (Sec. 4-1-5)
  • It shall be unlawful for any person with intent to solicit, promote, sell, lease, loan, or otherwise dispose of any event, commodity, service, security, real or personal property, or any other thing of value, to circulate, disseminate, publish, or broadcast, or otherwise place or distribute, any advertising sign, advertising material, or other commercial message that is knowingly false, deceptive, misleading, or otherwise calculated to cause injury or other disadvantage to its audience or any member thereof. (Sec. 4-1-6)
  • It shall be unlawful for any person to place or distribute, or to cause the same, any advertising sign, advertising material or other commercial message soliciting any event, commodity, service, or other thing of value in any public right-of-way, so as to interfere with or impede any pedestrian, bicycle, or vehicular traffic along or within such right-of-way. (Sec. 4-2-3)
  • Solicitation at posted residential premises prohibited (‘No Trespassing,’ ‘No Handbills,’ ‘Post No Bills,’ etc.). (Sec. 4-2-4)
  • It is unlawful to advertise any alcoholic liquor or tobacco product on an advertising sign within a 1,000-foot radius of any advertisement-sensitive property. (Sec. 4-3-4)
  • The following sign types are prohibited city-wide unless expressly allowed elsewhere: signs that substantially cover or conceal architectural features; wrapped signs operated as advertising signs; signs illuminated by/equipped with strobe or flashing lights; signs affixed to or supported by rocks, trees, or other natural features; signs affixed to or supported by fences or screening walls; dynamic sign on a currently registered motor vehicle; signs that produce sound, interfere with communications, produce/reflect motion pictures (unless animated), emit smoke, vapors, particles, or odors.   • Posting or constructing a sign, or performing any sign alteration, without having been issued a permit for such sign is unlawful, except certain temporary or small window signs. (Sec. 4-4-17)
  • Operating or maintaining a sign without having been issued a license for such operation is unlawful, except portable temporary signs or small window signs. (Sec. 4-4-17)
  • No sign may be altered in any way if permitted as an advertising sign in the Central Business District; alteration is cause for immediate revocation. (Sec. 4-4-127)
  • No permit may be issued for new/altered advertising signs outside Central Business District except upon waiver and findings, including traffic safety, aesthetics, tax and code compliance, and spacing. (Sec. 4-4-102)
  • No sign that constitutes an obsolete sign for at least 30 consecutive days, or any temporary sign for 7 consecutive days, may be presumed by the City to have been abandoned and must be removed. (Sec. 4-4-10)
