Sign Plan & Submission Notes for Columbus

  • A sign permit is required for all signs, except for specific exemptions including address signs, political signs, temporary real estate signs, portable/temporary advertising signs, public service signs, and traffic signs.
  • Applications for a sign permit must include a scaled site plan of the property showing the location and dimensions of all buildings, roads, driveways, other improvements, topographical features, and the location(s) of the proposed sign(s). Scaled drawings of the proposed sign, including dimensions, height, setback, content, and lettering dimensions, must also be submitted.
  • For large off-premises signs and certain dynamic signs, special permits such as an Interim Use Permit (IUP) are required, which involve an application, fee, public hearing before the Planning Commission, and City Council approval.
  • For signs requiring an Interim Use Permit or a variance, the sign application procedure is administered and adjudicated concurrently with the required IUP or variance application, as prescribed in Chapter 7A of the Columbus City Code.
  • If proposed sign support structure construction requires a Storm Water Management Plan, a copy or survey illustrating the plan must be submitted with the application.
  • Legal nonconforming signs may be continued through repair and maintenance but not expanded; nonconforming status may be lost if the sign is discontinued for more than a year or destroyed beyond 50% of market value without timely permit application.
  • For sign bands (multiple wall signs on one facade for multi-tenant/multi-use buildings), the aggregate wall sign area may not exceed district standards, and signage should be similar and complementary in size, shape, and location.
  • Applications for large off-premises signs require the site plan to illustrate distance to the closest other dynamic sign exceeding 200 square feet, even across highways.
