Prohibited Signs in King City

  • The following signs are illegal and expressly prohibited by this chapter: abandoned signs; advertising bench-type signs; pennants, streamers, festoon lighting, banners, inflatable signs including blimps/hot or cold air balloons (except as provided by ordinance); flashing signs; illuminated signs which direct light into a residence; obscene signs; obstruction signs; portable signs except real estate signs; rotating or moving signs; search lights or beacons; signs attached to trees or public utility poles (except public signs); signs mounted on public property or within the public right-of-way (except public signs); signs on stationary vehicles or trailers visible from the right-of-way and infrequently moved or moved primarily for display; signs resembling official traffic signs/signals (unless officially authorized); signs using bare-bulb illumination or visible immediate source of illumination except where permitted; strobe lights; structurally unsafe signs; any sign not complying with a specific provision of this chapter; any sign requiring a permit but without one; signs losing their nonconforming status due to alteration, relocation, replacement, or expiration of the amortization period; signs of illegal uses; signs constituting a public nuisance; readerboard/computer electronically controlled signs except for temperature and time (except as allowed for service stations).
  • Nonconforming signs shall not be altered in any way. Any alteration, relocation, or replacement of a nonconforming sign or any part thereof shall require immediate compliance with all provisions of this chapter.
  • No sign which is faded, worn or which poses a danger to the public may remain—such signs shall be repaired or removed.
  • It is a violation to erect, maintain, or use a sign contrary to this chapter, and each day that a violation exists constitutes a separate offense.
  • No public official, department, or employee shall issue a permit or grant approval for any sign which violates or fails to comply with the conditions or standards imposed by this chapter; any such permit or approval issued is void.
  • No permanent or temporary sign may create a hazard to the public (e.g., within paved street or attached to official traffic control signs).
