Prohibited Signs in Daytona Beach

  • Animated or moving parts on any sign.

  • Mobile or portable signs or sign structures that are not securely attached to the ground or to any other structure, including trailer signs, A-frame signs, and sandwich signs, except temporary traffic control signs necessary to safely direct traffic due to temporary or recently discovered hazardous conditions.

  • No sign structure or component shall interfere with, or be erected within, 10 feet of overhead electrical conductors or 3 feet from secondary voltage service drops.

Sign Plan & Submission Notes for Daytona Beach

  • A Sign Permit is required in accordance with the applicability standards and procedure in Section 3.4.Q, Sign Permit.
  • No permit shall be issued for any sign if a nonconforming billboard, roof, projecting, or pole sign exists at the business location.
  • A Comprehensive Sign Plan (CSP) may be approved for developments in MS districts, certain HM districts, college/university campuses, large retail centers, or sites in T-1 or PD-RD districts, meeting specific size and use thresholds.
  • Any CSP must identify all existing and proposed signs by general location and size, be consistent with the comprehensive plan, and comply with the intent and purpose of Section 6.10.
  • Comprehensive Sign Plans are subject to review and recommendation by the Planning Board and approval by City Commission resolution at a public hearing. In Redevelopment Areas, recommendation by the Redevelopment Board for the area is also required.
  • The CSP shall control development of signs on the property(s) subject to it, to the extent it includes standards different from those in the Code.
  • In Planned Development Districts (PD-G, PD-RD), sign schedules and standards are established in the PD agreement.
  • An applicant may seek approval of increased height or area for a ground sign via a Public or Semi-Public Use Permit (Sec. 3.4.H) or via Planning Board review (for certain interstate-adjacent locations).
  • Electronic Message Center Signs: Criteria may be waived or altered by the City Commission in a Comprehensive Sign Plan, Planned Development Agreement, or Public or Semi-Public Use Permit.
  • In some specialty or redevelopment districts, modifications to sign standards (for area/number) may be granted by the appropriate Redevelopment Board, in accordance with procedure and demonstration of compatibility.
