Prohibited Signs in Akron

  • No person shall place signs of any kind in the public right-of-way or on Village-owned or co-owned utility poles without the express permission of the Village Board or its designee.
  • No billboard, advertising structure or nonconforming sign in existence in any R District at the date of enactment shall, after three years from such date, continue to be a lawful use; such signs shall be discontinued (with the exception of lawfully existing signs accessory to a nonconforming business or industrial building).
  • No sign shall be erected or structurally altered except in conformance with this chapter.
  • No sign shall project closer than two feet to any curb face or traffic lane and must be maintained with at least 10 feet of unobstructed area between the sidewalk and any part of the sign or its supports.
  • No sign shall be erected thereby creating a traffic hazard due to its location.
  • No person shall erect or maintain a sign which obstructs free ingress to or egress from a required door, window, fire escape or other required exitway.
  • No sign shall have the characteristic or shape of any traffic control device or highway sign.
  • No sign shall be painted directly on the side or wall of any building.
  • No sign shall be permitted which flashes.
  • No sign shall be erected without a building permit.
  • No sign illumination shall be permitted with direct lighting which shines on any other property or is visible from any right-of-way.
