Prohibited Signs in Albany

  • No sign or part of a sign shall be located on any property without the consent of the owner, holder, lessee, agent or trustee or other party controlling the use of such property.
  • No sign may contain flashing, intermittent, rotating or moving lights, except for certain locations and signs as specifically allowed.

  • No sign shall resemble any official marker erected by the City, State of New York or any governmental agency, or by reason of position, shape, or color, conflict with or impair traffic signs/signals or cause confusion.
  • No sign that obstructs sight lines between three and six feet above the roadway is permitted within the sight triangle at corner lots (measured 20 feet along both curblines and connecting to form a triangle).
  • No sign or sign support shall be placed upon the roof of any building.
  • No signage shall contain any obscene wording or images.
  • Any part of a sign extending over a public right-of-way requires City approval and must have a minimum clearance of eight feet above sidewalks/walkways and ten feet above vehicle driving surfaces.
  • Any part of a sign extending over a privately owned pedestrian area requires owner approval and must have a minimum clearance of eight feet above sidewalks/walkways and ten feet above vehicle driving surfaces.

Temporary signs limited to six consecutive months per calendar year. Event/activity signs must be removed within 7 days after event.
  • A-frame or sandwich-type sidewalk signs in mixed-use districts, no taller than three feet, must leave at least a four-foot clear area for pedestrian passage, and be removed when the establishment is closed.
  • Seasonal holiday decorations and lighting.
  • Signs erected or required by any state or federal governmental agency (provided size, height, location, and type comply to extent practicable).
